This icon was a delight to create as Vanessa is very drawn to the power and beauty of the ocean. The icon was lovingly drawn by Miranda. It is believed that this title for Mary originates from a mis-translation of her name from the Hebrew, ‘Miryam’, meaning drop of the sea, into the Latin, ‘Stella Maris’, meaning star of the sea. Not surprisingly, Our Lady Star of the Sea or Stella Maris has become a much-loved title and devotion especially among Catholic coastal communities. Seafarers, past and present, rely on the stars as navigation guides to reach their destinations safely. We too, look to Mary to be our guide, shining her light towards her son, Jesus.

Our Lady Star of the Sea, is depicted standing in the ocean, wreathed in the breaking waves. On her left is a gentle beach with a Pandanus tree, common to Australian beaches, while the coast on her right shows the Banksia shrub of the coastal headlands. Beneath Our Lady are the corals, fish and a marine turtle of the Great Barrier Reef, and above her head blaze the stars of the Southern Cross.

Her Feast Day is celebrated on 31 May.
